In the first year following Matthew's death, his parents channeled their emotional turmoil into action for our fallen heroes and their families. With assistance from both U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter and U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer the Holley’s were able to advocate for amendments to the law in the 2007 Defense Appropriations bill. The changes now ensure our fallen service members are given proper honors for their last measure of devotion to our great nation. Each fallen hero now arrives home, to be welcomed by their families aboard a charter jet instead of in the cargo hold of commercial airlines. Their caskets are met by honor guards in white gloves and crisp uniforms, instead of baggage handlers with forklifts. The legislation, which President Bush signed into law in October 2006 and the Pentagon began following January 2007, is called the “Holley Provision” in honor of Matthew Holley.
The following stories highlights the journey of two ordinary parents doing what some believed would be impossible to achieve. Thanks to all along the way who encouraged us to see this important change accomplished.
